What is persistent estrus?

The duration of estrus in cows is very small, beyond the normal time range, which is a persistent estrus. This is due to the alternating development of follicles. The follicle develops on one side of the ovary and produces estrogen, which causes the cow to estrus. Soon after, the follicle develops on the other side of the ovary, and two follicles alternate to produce estrogen, thus prolonging the duration of cow estrus. Ovarian cysts can also lead to persistent development. Due to the persistent estrus caused by alternate development of follicles, when transferred to normal estrus, fertility can still be matched. Because of the persistent estrus caused by ovarian cysts, early treatment should be performed.
