According to a new study in pigs, an implanted sensor can wirelessly transfer the concentration of sugar in the blood to an external receptor for a year or more. If this method is also shown to be effective in the human body, the implant will enable the diabetic patient to continuously monitor the glucose in the blood wirelessly and submit this information to a physician or patient caregiver. Information from the sensor can be used to assist in determining the dose and timing of insulin injections or oral hypoglycemic agents, alerting to dangerous hypoglycemic concentrations, and guiding dietary and exercise adjustments to help people fight diabetes. All people with diabetes are struggling to regain normal control of blood sugar because their blood sugar levels can soar after eating or fall to dangerously low levels after insulin injection.
