American scientists have used rat cardiomyocytes to create a variety of muscle repair films on plastic polymer substrates that have a wide range of motor functions. The results of this study are expected to bring good news to patients with heart and other muscle tissue damage. Related papers were published in the September 7 issue of Science.
In the new study, a team led by biophysicist Kevin Parker of Harvard University in the United States has adopted a more versatile chemical molding method, microcontact printing (μCP). Ten years ago, Harvard University chemist George Whitesides invented the μCP technology, which is like using a miniature seal to lay down a specific chemical structure at a desired surface location.
In the study, Parker, Whitesides, and colleagues first placed a thin layer of thermosensitive polymer material on a glass slide and then added a highly active high vinyl content silicone rubber (PDMS) to it. Using the μCP process, the researchers "printed" the formed fibronectin layer on the two substrates and finally attached the mouse cardiomyocytes to the thin layer of the protein. After a few days of incubation, these cardiomyocytes grow, diffuse, and create new connections. The researchers then lower the temperature and the thermosensitive polymer and its upper parts are detached from the slide. By controlling the structure of the fibronectin layer and the entire assembly process, researchers have been able to create a wide variety of thin film materials that can perform a variety of functions such as roll, jump, grab, and even swim.
Robert Langer, a tissue engineering expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said, "This method is very smart." However, he also stressed that it takes many years for the technology to be applied to tissue repair. This is a long-term goal. ——China Medicine 123 Network
