US develops new tools for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Michael Guo of the University of California, San Diego has developed a genetic mapping tool that can better diagnose and treat common tumors. The focus of this study was to map the molecular characteristics of the most common and fatal early brain tumors, so as to distinguish which subtypes it belongs to in an MRI scan.
Guo and his team used biopsy samples to perform gene structure mapping for different subtypes of tumors and compared these mappings with MRI scans of patients who provided live samples. He said: "This is a powerful, scalable technology that can be combined with different scanning technologies and can be applied to different types of tumors, such as liver cancer tumors." Although this technology is put into clinical use before Further testing is needed, but it will help doctors identify which treatments are targeted for which tumor subtypes to design a better treatment.
Guo said: "The medical goal is to prescribe the right medicine. This technology has potential and is showing initial prospects that may help us achieve this goal." - Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
